Abraham Lincoln and Logan County

[February 12, 2009] As a surveyor and circuit-riding lawyer, Abraham Lincoln became personal friends to many early settlers in Logan County before he was beloved by an entire nation. As a member of the Illinois Legislature in 1839, he had a major role in the official legislation that established Logan County.

Postville was selected as the first county seat, and the courthouse was the site where one of the first references was made to Abraham Lincoln as "Honest Abe." County government was moved to Mount Pulaski in 1848, and the original courthouse remains there today. The county seat was moved again to Lincoln's namesake town in 1855.
