Tammy Sue Shanle was two miles south of
Lincoln, headed north on Route 121, at 4:40
p.m. She was riding a black 2007
Harley-Davidson.
The driver of a southbound vehicle, Tracy
L. Matherly, 41, and his passenger, April N.
Gehlbach, 32, both of Mount Pulaski,
witnessed Shanle lose control of the
motorcycle, for unknown reasons. The
motorcycle crossed into the southbound lane.
Matherly, driving a white Pontiac Grand Am,
pulled to the west shoulder to avoid the
motorcycle.
Also traveling southbound, behind
Matherly, were Michael D. Cox, 56, and his
passenger, Cathy Cox, 55, both of Decatur,
in a maroon 2002 Chevrolet Impala.
Cox did not see the motorcycle in time
and struck it. The collision occurred in the
southbound lane.
The motorcycle came to final rest in the
west ditch.
Cox's vehicle came to final rest facing
east, straddling the fogline of the
southbound lane.
The Logan County deputy coroner
pronounced the driver of the motorcycle dead
at the scene.
Michael Cox was not injured. Cathy Cox
was transported to St. John's Hospital in
Springfield with serious, but
non-life-threatening injuries.
The Illinois State Police were assisted
at the scene by the Lincoln Rural Fire
Department, Logan County Sheriff's Office,
Mount Pulaski Police Department and Logan
County Coroner's Office.
