Labor union sends team to investigate plant explosion

H&R Staff Report

Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union's emergency response team has been sent to investigate Friday's explosion at the Formosa Plastics Corp. plant in Illiopolis.

Coordinator Debbie Hayes and the investigation team is in Decatur to provide support to victims of the explosion and employees who worked at the plant. Hayes can be reached by cell phone at (615) 585-0803.

PACE is attempting to contact Formosa management and resolve issues that affect employees as a result of the explosion. The union intends to call a meeting of all members by the end of this week, after issues have been addressed with plant management.

An announcement about such a meeting will be made as soon as possible, according to a news release from the union.

PACE represents more than 275,000 workers in the pulp, paper, chemical, oil and atomic industries.

State Rep. Bill Mitchell, R-Forsyth, and State Sen. Bill Brady, R-Bloomington, will meet Monday to continue contacting appropriate state authorities to help the community of Illiopolis and employees of the plant.

Mitchell has been in contact with Carl Hawkinson, deputy chief of staff for the Illinois Department of Public safety. Brady and Mitchell have talked with Mike Chamness from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency. Mitchell and House Republican leader Tom Cross, R-Oswego, will meet with the governor's office Monday.
