Illiopolis explosion claims fifth victim

Link to More Information
DECATUR - A 50-year-old Decatur man died Thursday from injuries suffered in an Illiopolis chemical plant explosion.

Randy Hancock died at noon Thursday in Springfield's Memorial Medical Center from burns that covered 60 percent of his body and complications from the burns, said Sangamon County Coroner Susan Boone.

His wife, Linda Hancock, 56, also of Decatur, died at the scene of the April 23 explosion at Formosa Plastics Corp.

Others who died at the scene were Decatur residents Joe E. Machalek, 50, and Larry Graves, 47, and Glenn Lyman, 49, of Cornland. Boone said they died from thermal burns and blunt force injuries from the blast.

The cause of the explosion, which led to the evacuation of the community and was heard in several neighboring counties, is still under investigation. Chemicals involved in the fire were used in the plant's production of PVC resin pellets.

Boone said an autopsy on Randy Hancock was performed Thursday, and she intends to have one inquest soon for all five. An inquest would help expedite families' access to vital services and information, including Social Security, checking accounts and insurance, she said.

"I'm really intent on getting the death certificates to the families," she said. "They can't do anything without the death certificates."

Two Decatur workers injured in the explosion and fire remained hospitalized Thursday, said Roberta Churchill, nursing supervisor at Springfield's Memorial Medical Center.

Bradford Bradshaw was listed in critical condition. Chris Havener, who earlier was listed in fair condition, was in good condition Thursday, she said.
