Verona Lovitt Wood

Verona Lovitt was born June 17, 1918 in Terre Haute, Illinois, the only child of Vernon and Blanche Painter Lovitt. She married Carroll E. “Woody” Wood, August 1, 1938 in Macomb, Illinois.  Verona graduated from Terre Haute High School in 1934. She then attended Western Illinois State Teachers College, Macomb, Illinois where she graduated in 1938.

She was a school teacher for twenty years, seventeen years with District 87 in Bloomington, Illinois. In 1973 the Woods retired from teaching and moved to West Virginia to be closer to their daughter, Barbara and family. In 1974 the Woods were the first permanent residents to build a home at Alpine Lake, near Terra Alta, WV.  They moved to Reedsville, WV in 1987. After her husband’s death in 2000, Verona relocated to Parkersburg, WV.

Verona was a member of Wayside United Methodist Church, Vienna, WV, where she was active in the Mary Martha Circle. She was a member of Delta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma having served in many capacities in local, state and regional positions. She was a member of P.E. O. Chapter G.  Verona was elected to several terms on the City Council in Reedsville, WV, and also served on the Preston County Economic Development Council.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Salter and husband, Ron of Vienna and grandsons, Gary Salter also of Vienna , Greg Salter of Huntersville, NC. and great-granddaughter, Mylee Salter of Vienna.

Her husband of 62 years and her parents preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, December 10th at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg.  A memorial service will be held at Wayside UMC at a later date.
