Dorothy McFarland
Dorothy Marie McFarland, 71, a resident of
Friendship Manor in Lincoln, formerly of Wapella, died Thursday
(July 29, 2004) at 11:41 a.m. at St. John's Hospital in
Springfield.
Her funeral will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at
Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with Harold
Driskell officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at the
funeral home.
A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday
in Sharon Cemetery at Ramsey.
She was retired from housekeeping at St.
Clara's Manor in Lincoln.
She was born Dec. 3, 1932, at Zion to Walter
Ross and Henrietta Marie Stocker Brooks. She was married to Melvin
McFarland from Dec. 20, 1952, until 1981. He survives.
Family members are three sons, Larry (and
Virginia) McFarland of Daly City, Calif., Jeff (and Johanna)
McFarland of St. Louis, Mo., and J.R. (and Tajauna) McFarland of
Lincoln; three daughters, Marie (and Steve) Cash of New Holland,
Kelly Gonzales of Lincoln and Sue (and Jeff) Brummell of Lincoln; 25
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Roy
Brooks and Robert Brooks, both of Zion.
She was preceded in death by her parents and
one brother, Walter.
She was a member of the Church of Christ in
Lincoln and the tenant council at Friendship Manor.

Sophia Walsh
Sophia M. Walsh, 90, of Mount Pulaski died
Wednesday (July 28, 2004) at 12:18 a.m. at Vonderlieth Living Center
in Mount Pulaski.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at
Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski, following a
rosary service at 3:30.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at
St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Mount Pulaski, with Father
Thomas Shaw officiating.
Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery,
Lincoln.
Mrs. Walsh was a homemaker.
She was born April 22, 1914, in Milltown,
Ind., to Peter Dominic and Mary Magdalene Simon Hoffman. She married
Leo M. Walsh in Frenchtown, Ind., on Sept. 1, 1936. He died March
28, 1990.
She is survived by one son, Patrick Walsh Sr.
of Mount Pulaski; two daughters, Barbara (and Ronald) Sather of
McAlester, Okla., and Rosemary (and Richard) Christoph of Racine,
Wis.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers,
Ed (and Betty) Hoffman of New Albany, Ind., and Fred Hoffman of
Floyds Knobs, Ind.
She was also preceded in death by one son,
Leo Walsh Jr.; five sisters; and two brothers.
She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas
Catholic Church in Mount Pulaski and the Rosary and Altar Society of
the church.

Jewell Johnson
Jewell Virginia Johnson, 95, formerly of
Buffalo, died Monday (July 26, 2004) at 4 a.m. at the Christian
Village in Lincoln.
No service or visitation has been planned at
this time. Her body was donated to medical research. Burial will be
in Missouri at a later date.
Peasley Funeral Home in Lincoln was in charge
of local arrangements.
Mrs. Johnson assisted in her husband's dental
offices in Springfield and Buffalo and later worked in the post
office in Buffalo.
She was born Sept. 28, 1908, in Hartsville,
Mo., to Marion and Clara Carr Palmer. She married W. Johnson in
1931, and he preceded her in death.
She is survived by two nephews, Gary (and
Ann) Palmer and Michael (and Peggy) Palmer of California; a
godchild, Renee Sutton of California; and many great-nieces and
great-nephews.
She was also preceded in death by one
brother, Russell Palmer.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of Lincoln
Christian Church.
She graduated from Hartsville High School,
Hartsville, Mo., in 1926 and then graduated from Washington
University, St. Louis, Mo., in 1930 as a registered
nurse.

Belle Drake
Belle Marie Drake, 30, of Urbana, formerly of
Beason, died Sunday (July 25, 2004) at 9:30 a.m. at her parents'
home in Beason.
Visitation was on Wednesday at the Wesley
Foundation in Urbana and on Thursday at the First United Methodist
Church in Lincoln.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First
United Methodist Church, Lincoln, with the Rev. Jame Hahs and the
Rev. Sara Isbell officiating.
Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery,
Beason.
Miss Drake was a member of the class of 2007
at the University of Illinois School of Veterinary
Medicine.
She was born July 14, 1974, in Lincoln to
Harold Lowell and Nancy Bratton Drake.
She is survived by her parents, of Beason;
one brother, Douglas Drake; and her paternal grandparents, David and
Merida Drake of Beason.
She was preceded in death by one brother,
Curtis Andrew Drake, and by her maternal grandparents, Sam and Mary
Margaret Bratton.
She was a member of the First United
Methodist Church in Lincoln, the Amasong women's choral group in
Champaign-Urbana and was affiliated with the Wesley Foundation in
Urbana.
She was a 1992 graduate of Lincoln Community
High School. She graduated with honors from the University of
Illinois in 1997 with a double major in rhetoric and
biology.

William Velde
William A. "Bill" Velde, 80, of New Holland
died Thursday (July 29, 2004) at 8:45 a.m. at Memorial Medical
Center in Springfield.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at
Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City.
His funeral will
be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hurley Funeral Home, with Nash Shawgo
officiating.
Burial will be in Richmond Grove Cemetery,
rural New Holland.
Mr. Velde farmed in the New Holland area. He
had also been a livestock buyer in the Peoria stockyards and a farm
foreman for Del Monte in DeKalb.
He served with the U.S. Marines during World
War II.
He was born Feb. 13, 1924, at New Holland to
William Jacob and Katherine Peterson Velde. He married Evelyn
McMurray in Champaign in 1946, and they were later divorced. He
married Naydene Renken in Mason City in 1975, and they were
divorced.
He is survived by one son, Kent (and Marcia)
Ferguson of Milwaukee, Wis.; two stepsons, Kent Renken of Mason City
and Kraig Renken; one daughter, Karen (and John) Dollmeyer of
Gurnee; one stepdaughter, Kim Entwistle of Mason City; and two
sisters Marilee Blessman of Missouri and Marjorie (and Robert)
Brownfield of Mason City.
He was a member of Mason City United
Methodist Church, Farm Bureau, American Legion Post 496 in Mason
City, and Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He was a former Mason. He
served on the Mason City school board, the Farm Bureau board and was
a 4-H leader.
He was a 1942 graduate of Mason City High
School and a 1948 graduate of the University of Illinois.

Mason City Area Nursing Home.
Glenn Davison
Glenn Edward Davison, 80, of Carrollton,
Texas, formerly of Lincoln, died Monday (July 26, 2004) at 8:10 a.m.
at his home.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at
Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Henry Cox
officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the
service.
Burial, with military rites, will be in Irish
Grove Cemetery, Middletown.
Mr. Davison was a retired postal
worker.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War
II.
He was born Jan. 30, 1924, in Middletown to
Oliver Paul and Anna Wright Davison. He married Jennie E. Davison on
March 31, 1960, in Lincoln. She died June 27, 1997.
He is survived by one daughter, Patricia
Jayneane DeGrave of Carrollton, Texas; two stepchildren, Donald
Duane Lovan of Lincoln and Martha Jane Hester of Miami, Okla.; 11
grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild;
and one sister, Helen Mason of Lincoln.
He was also preceded in death by one stepson,
Theodore Wesley Lovan, and one brother, King Davison.
He attended Methodist services and was a
member of the Masons and American Legion Post 263,
Lincoln.

Emma Gehlbach
Emma Dirks Gehlbach, 88, of Owensboro, Ky.,
died there on Sunday (July 25, 2004) at Owensboro Medical Health
System.
A graveside service was on Friday morning at
Union Cemetery, Lincoln.
Holland and Barry Funeral Home of Lincoln
handled arrangements.
Mrs. Gehlbach was a teacher for over 20
years.
She was born in Greenview in 1916. She
married Melvin P. Gehlbach, and he died in 1963.
She is survived by two daughters, Jane
Perkins of Hawesville, Ky., and Ruth Blakeman of Owensboro, Ky.; two
sons, Ralph Gehlbach of Denton, Texas, and Richard Gehlbach of
Lexington, Ky.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by one
daughter, Margaret Craun.
She was a member of the First United
Methodist Church of Henderson, Ky., where she served on the
administrative board, the Henderson Ministry Outreach board and was
a member of the Lucy Moss Circle.
She graduated from the University of Illinois
with a degree in Latin in 1937.
