Mt. Pulaski Zion Lutheran
Church On Friday, August 22, 2008, the students of Zion Lutheran School, Mt. Pulaski, will take part in a nationwide program to honor our fallen American heroes in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. The students, staff, and friends will walk and especially honor Army Pfc. James P. White, Jr. a former Zion student who was killed in Afghanistan on Aug. 11, 2006. James was from Huber Heights, Ohio, and had been assigned to 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, NY. James (J.P.) was killed when his platoon came in contact with enemy forces using rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire during combat operations in Nangalam, Afghanistan. Also killed were Spc. Rogelio R. Garza, Jr. and Pfc. Andrew R. Small. James was the son of Jim and Robin White, Huber Heights, OH (formerly of Mt. Pulaski) and the grandson of John White, Janet White, Ron Phipps, and Amy Phipps.
The walk in J.P.’s honor is part of a nationwide program called Run for the Fallen. Beginning Flag Day, June 14, 2008, a dedicated team of runners started across America from Fort Irwin, CA to Arlington National Cemetery, and ran one mile for every Soldier, Sailor, Airmen, and Marine killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. For ten weeks, team members marked each mile with an American flag and a sign card in an apolitical reflection of remembrance of each service member. The run culminates on Aug. 24th with a final nationwide remembrance of those killed not only in Operation Iraqi Freedom, but also those killed in Operation Enduring Freedom. For more information, you may visit www.runforthefallen.org.
